Toolkit for designing safe baby carriers and other children’s items

The Kids in Danger nonprofit group created the Kid Safety Design Toolkit, a guide for brands and product designers focused on creating safe children’s products. This free toolkit offers a broad look at considerations for designing safe baby carriers, strollers, toys, and other children’s products.

The toolkit is primarily comprised of video content, and if you struggle with consuming video content, you may want to download an in-browser tool that allows you to change the speed of videos before watching the presentations.

Although the toolkit references US laws and regulations, the contents of the presentation will be helpful for businesses operating anywhere in the world. It may also be specifically helpful to companies creating the risk analysis documents required by the EU General Product Safety Regulation.

The toolkit covers a lot of ground, such as:

  • Product risk assessment
  • Foreseeable misuse
  • Creating quality instructions
  • Product testing
  • Market research
  • Design safety heirarchy
  • Developing compliance protocols
  • Accessing injury data
  • Promoting safety in marketing
  • Planning for real-life use

The first part of the toolkit has four primary modules:

  • Building a design safety foundation
  • Basic design safety tools
  • Putting design safety into practice
  • Getting your product to market
  • Marketing for safety

Additional modules focus on products designed for sleep, at-home, out-and-about, and play.

The toolkit includes presentations by a variety of experts, including Neal Cohen, BCIA’s product compliance attorney and former small-business ombudsman to the US CPSC.

The toolkit is free and requires only that you create a login. It’s an excellent resource for anyone focused on innovating in the babywearing market or creating safe baby carriers in general, even if you already have a product that is well established.
