Health Canada issued an overview of their 2020/2021 product recalls, including children’s product recalls in Canada in a report called “Annual compliance verification reporting for the Consumer Product Safety Program 2020-2021.”
Health Canada is the public agency charged with public safety and enforcing regulations of children’s products and other consumer products in Canada. They are the agency that will issues children’s product recalls and other recalls.
While there were no recalls specifically for baby carriers issued by Health Canada in 2020/2021, it’s important for baby carrier manufacturers, importers, and exporters be aware of the trends in both children’s product recalls and generally.
At the end of this article, you’ll find a link to a .pdf report issued by Health Canada with excellent infographics that explain the process of regulatory enforcement by the agency.
Highlights from the report relevant to children’s product recalls
- 9% of product recalls issued in 2020/2021 in Canada were children’s product recalls
- There were 482 shipments (overall) rejected at the border for compliance. Of these, 82 were commercial shipments. The remaining 400 were “personal.” This suggests that Canadian consumers who purchase baby carriers from out of the country risk having their slings or carriers inspected and refused at the border due to regulatory compliance issues
- 15% of all product recalls occurred due to inspections, rather than specific reports of noncompliance or product hazards.
- Health Canada worked closely with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (49 product recalls) and, in one case, Mexico’s Consumer Protection Federal Agency (known as PROFECO) to issue joint recalls, so it’s prudent to be aware of the safety regulations in countries outside of Canada even when you don’t ship into those countries
